CE accessory distributor Nedis is a new player in the UK market. Arvind Patel, managing director of Nedis UK, spoke to Anna Ryland about the company’s ambitious plans in the UK and the reasons why Nedis is a good business partner for the independent.
Nedis was founded in 1982 in Holland as a spares distributor and over time became an accessory distributor. The company distributes CE products and accessories and it’s also Europe’s second largest wholesaler of CE accessories. It has 350 employees and 19 offices worldwide. Its unique feature is the state of the art logistic operations. Nedis group has a portfolio of over 30,000 products lines. Among its brands are Konig accessories, HQ batteries, Profigold, Bandrige cables and connectors, CamLink.
“We are a one-stop distributor supplying a wide range of accessories, including cables, connecters, lighting, batteries, domestic appliance accessories, such as vacuum cleaner bags, security products, computer multi-media accessories and CE products, such as Konig DAB radios,” says Arvind Patel, managing director of Nedis UK. “We offer good, better, best solutions – which the dealers could tailor to their customer’s budgets. We also offer retailers merchandising material and support.”
Nedis entered the UK in 2008, when the company acquired an interest in Seme, a Melton Mowbray-based supplier of spares and accessories to the service industry. In 2011 Seme Nedis acquired Fameart, a manufacturer of camcorders, rechargeable batteries and photographic accessories. In November 2011, Nedis and Fameart merged and began trading as Nedis UK, relocating its operations to Leicester.
In September 2012, Nedis group became integrated with Swiss-based Datwyler group, an industrial component supplier and a distributor of engineering components.
The company distributes its products from its central warehouse in Holland. “Our biggest strength is our range that consists of 30,000 products. This means that our dealers have an instant access to a vast selection of merchandise without the need to store any of them. We can organize a drop shipment of any of them either to a retailer or to his customers. To an internet retailer we offer a complete solution: a contact link on an FDP link so he can populate his website with product details, stock availability information and product shipment from our warehouse to his customers.
“Our supply chain is also our great asset – our fully automated warehouse and logistic system in Holland are among the best in Europe. We can pick and pack up to 10,000 products a day which will reach customers within 48 hours.
“We have six sales staff who visit independent retailers on a four-week cycle basis and we are in the process of recruiting two more.”
Nedis has a broad customer base. “At one end of the scale we have multiple outlets like Argos and Dixons and at the other end there are independent retailers. We also supply online retailers like Amazon and wholesale distributors.
“Using our large product range and our nine brands we can differentiate our offer between the customers. For example in the cable category, we sell the Profigold and Bandrige products mainly through the independent sector and HQ cables through internet retailers.
“In the UK we appear to be new kids in the town but in fact the company has been around for a while and has a lot of market expertise; our sales team consists of very experienced people who joined us from leading CE brands in Britain and they understand well the needs of the independent sector. Most importantly we are able to deliver profitable lines for the independent.”
