The business was founded by Harry and Edward Marsh in 1930 in the then Sturminster Newton Bus Depot, where it sold cars, bicycles, electric lighting, electric bells, gramophones and wireless receivers, as well as changing batteries. Today, Sarah Palmer, Edward’s granddaughter, runs the business, which has stores in Sherborne and Sturminster Newton, with her husband Ross.
Mrs Palmer said: “Our anniversary promotions are proving very popular with customers, and we are set to give away a plasma TV to a lucky customer in a prize draw at the end of our 80-day promotion. Our staff, stay with us for many years – we have a combined 250 years worth of knowledge – so we guarantee a friendly face and any problems, which may arise, are dealt with as efficiently and effectively as possible, hence our adage: ‘For service beyond the sale’.”
The company is a Euronics member and Stuart Cook, chief executive of Euronics, congratulated Sarah and Ross Marsh as they celebrate 80 years in business: “In the current climate, retailing is tough, but the independent electrical specialist, like EB Marsh & Son, is still the best place to go for the latest products and the best advice.”
