‘10 million homes’ enjoying LG inverter linear compressor fridges

In Industry News On

Manufacturer LG Electronics (LG) has announced landmark sales of more than 10 million refrigerators with its patented inverter linear compressor around the world since 2001.

In 2001, LG introduced the ‘world’s first’ refrigerator powered by an inverter linear compressor. In 2007, LG sold one million of its inverter linear compressor-equipped refrigerators and increased that number to five million in 2011 and 10 million earlier this month, the Korean manufacturer says. Boasting strong results in premium refrigerator markets such as Korea, North America, Europe and the CIS region, LG is expecting to sell more than two million inverter linear compressor refrigerators in 2014.

Earlier this year, the inverter linear compressor was tested by one of Europe’s scientific and technical bodies, the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE). LG’s technology employs a straight piston drive instead of a conventional reciprocating drive, resulting in less internal friction than conventional motors, LG says. This is designed to increase the refrigerator’s reliability and durability while generating less noise while running. LG claims that the compressor technology improves energy efficiency compared to conventional compressors, and reduces internal friction causing less wear to the refrigerator and helping it to achieve a ‘20 year life-span’.

The inverter linear compressor has been covered under a 10-year warranty since 2009.

LG head of the refrigerator business unit Young-il Park commented: “LG has always strived to offer consumers the most advanced, highest performing appliances in the industry. Our inverter linear compressor is the result of our commitment to excellence and technological innovation and demonstrates LG’s desire to lead the global premium refrigerator market.”
